GQA is a well known and respected practice of historic building architects and as such the majority of our commissions relate to listed buildings and their surroundings as shown in the GQA Portfolio.

We recognise that quality of design and quality of materials in historic buildings is of the utmost importance.  GQA senior staff take a keen interest at all levels of a project’s design that we attain the levels of quality required by our exacting clients and just as exacting buildings.  We consider that it is vital that the client feels thoroughly integrated within the design and project process and as a member of the team of consultants and contractors to ensure the projects success.  If the standard of design and detailing is not the highest then the team’s satisfaction will become considerably less than it might have been.  Similarly the use of compatible materials is essential in a historic context if success is to be achieved.  The Practice’s philosophy of conservation and repair of buildings is predicated on the SPAB approach to “minimum intervention” and “maximum retention of historic fabric” in addition to defining conservation as the reanimation of the new in the context of change.

GQA have enjoyed the opportunity to work on some World Heritage Sites both in this country and abroad.  Many of these projects we have been fortunate to work on over the years are displayed in the Historic Buildings/World Heritage Site section of our website.  We have also had the privilege to design new residential country houses in a traditional manner within Conservation Areas and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Some of these projects can be seen in the new projects section of our website.

All historic buildings have a setting that can either contribute to, or detract from the building.  Many of the most important historic buildings have carefully designed settings that holistically integrate architecture and landscape.  GQA have been fortunate in working on some of the most sensitive landscapes in England which can be seen in the Landscape and Urbanscape section of our web site.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has funded projects at: The Former Royal Naval College, Greenwich; Princess Amelia’s Bathhouse, Gunnersbury; and the Women of World War II Memorial, Whitehall.
