GQA extended and enhanced the original roofline of the listed mansion block adjacent to the Royal Albert Hall. 5 luxury penthouse flats were created using pre-fabricated units craned into position to avoid disturbance to lower flats. Alde Cottage |
This 19th Century property has been considerably altered since its construction. GQA resolved certain planning and aesthetic issues with the property as planning consent had been given to link barn and cottage. GQA redesigned the pitch of the link roof and thatch to aesthetically engage it with the surrounding area. Click here to view additional photos >> |
GQA advised on the investigation and subsequent repair work of the facades. It is clad in a rare example of overlapping terracotta mathematical tiles which required repairs before the façades could be cleaned. In early 1995 this mansion was in extremely poor condition and the local authority was concerned about its long term well-being. The Authority commissioned Giles Quarme & Associates to prepare a condition survey and schedule of works under the Planning (Listed Building and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. |

Lasscos own this three storey mansion and with GQA’s help intend to create an impressive showroom. Original ovolo-moulded panelling, extant in two rooms, will be used as templates to restore other rooms. GQA were involved in researching the planning and development potential in 1994 and then further detailed proposals in 1999. This followed the Grade 1 listed building, by Robert and James Adam, being placed on English Heritage’s Buildings at Risk Register in 1991. |

Giles Quarme & Associates were brought into this project when the central house in John Nash’s famous Grade I terrace over looking Regent’s Park had been recently altered without Listed Building Consent and was the subject of an Enforcement Notice by the Local Authority and repossession proceedings by the Crown Estate. Chilham Castle |
Restoration and alteration of Grade I listed Castle that had been the subject of insensitive and inappropriate alterations. The Castle now combines 21st Century amenities in a traditional environment. When acquired by our clients as a family house Chilson Farm House, North West Oxfordshire, had fairly basic accommodation and poorly looked after. As part of the restoration and refurbishment of the house it was extended into out buildings and long barn. Individual barns and out houses were also consolidated. The brief was to restore and retrieve as much as possible of this late 18th century Grade II farmhouse internal plan with its cross-passage and provide a modern functioning family house. Clifton Hall |
Dr Walls produced the Condition Surveys for the Grade I listed mansion to enable the clients to make decisions about future maintenance and restoration works. The Dutch painted panelling depicting military techniques unfortunately has been affected by a blown pipe behind the panelling and hot steam thereby warping the wood. |
Coombe Cottages |
A pair of late nineteenth century agricultural workman’s cottages restored and upgraded to provide staff accommodation for Huttons Farm. Partly because of movement resulting from the sloping site there were ‘dead’ cracks in the external flint work and these extended into the interior which were addressed. |
GQA reported to their client on possible proposals for the mansions development. Suggestions ranged from re-uniting the grounds and mansion by leasing it to the National Trust, developing the mansion as a hotel or as a single family house and how to access grants and funds to restore the property. Fletchers Farm |
A thoroughly inappropriate extension was added to the 1960s building in the 1990s. No thought was given to the aesthetic correlation with the original and an adhoc extension provided. Holland Park |
GQA have been commissioned to refurbish and extend a Grade II listed 1862 Stucco residential property near Holland Park. Currently we are in the concept design stage for the full renovation and upgrade to reinstate traditional details in the house and a basement extension incorporating a swimming pool, gym and squash court under a landscaped garden. |
On behalf of the Crown Estate and Indian Government Sydney Smirke’s mansion behind Kensington Palace was restored and modernised by GQA both externally and internally. It boasts the finest Louis XIV carved & gilded panelling in England, 18th Century wall paintings and Art Deco bathrooms all of which were conserved. Click here to view additional photos >> |

Years of neglect, vandalism, dry rot and structural decay had rendered four substantial double fronted listed Grade II Georgian houses almost beyond repair. GQA was Architect and Developer negotiating their purchase, obtaining relevant Consents, organising and supervising the construction. Queen Mary Hospital |
GQA were approached by St James Group Ltd in November 2005 to assist with production of conversion proposals for the alteration and restoration of Roehampton House, designed by both Thomas Archer and Edwin Lutyens. | GQA were responsible for the internal and external refurbishment of this large Grade II stucco building in Pimlico. The refurbishment was organised by the leaseholders in compliance with their agreements. Extreme care was taken to protect the site and local public, as the building is situated very near a school. | |
Tender documentation compiled for Stowe House on behalf of The Stowe House Preservation Trust for the Phase I plan of the north elevation of the Grade I listed building. GQA were asked to restore, refurbish and modernise the Victorian House. It was stipulated that whilst retaining and replacing original features of the property it should also reflect the clients’ lifestyle of clean modern 20th century living. White Cottage, by the eminent Arts & Crafts Architect Charles Voysey, had been severely compromised by an unsympathetic 1950s extension (see middle photograph). Giles Quarme & Associates rebuilt the extension in a manner sympathetic with the spirit of the original building, using Voysey’s original drawings to ensure the detailing was authentic. GQA have designed two properties to replace one 1960s property, that currently exits on 2 original building plots, in the Hampstead Garden Suburbs. The two new houses will be centrally located within each plot and designed to have a minimal impact on amenities of the adjoining property and the streetscene. |
